How to make the most out of high school - Ruth Brown, School Counselor

• Come to the meetings.
• Ask Questions.
• Keep a copy of your student transcript and grade check.
• Take the PLAN, PSAT, ACT, SAT, and SATII (if needed).
• Keep the school calendar where you can refer to it often.
• Attendance is very important. Be here every day and on time. Good attendance gives you the best opportunity for good grades. Poor attendance is never beneficial to your academic performance.
• Do your best each day. Be organized. Learn how to manage your time well. Do your own work.
• Follow school rules. Rules will follow you your whole life. Now is the time to learn how to follow them.
• If you play sports, stay eligible.
• Be successful in the classroom: adapt to different teachers, have everything you need when you enter the classroom, always do your homework, treat others with courtesy and respect, and ask questions.
• Learn how to take good notes, learn how to study a textbook, read your lesson in your textbook, and work on test taking strategies.
• Write down your goals.
• Get involved in school activities, community service projects, become a leader, go to youth meetings, and have fun.
• Learn how to handle stress. A little stress helps you stay alert and focused. Too much stress can keep you from doing and feeling your best.
• Get help if you need help. Ask your parents, a teacher, fellow students, or another adult.
• Plan and prepare for your future. High School should lead to college.
• Think about a career that might be right for you. The fastest growing career fields now are health care, education, and computers/technology.

• — 3. Think about the consequences of what you are doing.

• — 5. Do not slack.

• — 1. Set goals with your student.
• — 2. Stay involved.
• — 3. Make sure your student goes to school.
• — 4. Go to events.
• — 5. Work with the school.
• — 6. Watch the phone, TV, computer; make sure they do not interfere with school work.
• — 7. Listen to your student.
• — 8. Do not be overprotective.
• — 9. Ask questions.
• — 10. Remember, everyone makes mistakes.
• — 11. Set a curfew.
• — 12. Be supportive and patient.

Important information for Junior High Parents (this years 6th and 7th graders)
• — Be on time to school and class.
• — Write down all assignments, even ones that are finished.
• — Work ahead on long term assignments.
• — Go to after school help.
• — Avoid missing school.
• — Set up a routine and stay on it.
• — Studying for a test is homework.
• — Review and read ahead makes a good student.
